Is Spray Tanning Safe?

Picture
There has been a lot of buzz about this lately and I want to set the record straight.

Sunless spray tanning is safe.

In December 2010 the European commission did a thorough study on DHA and spray tanning. Below is a link to the entire 35 page research document.

Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety - OPINION ON Dihydroxyacetone

In summary, the report says that based upon the available information, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety considers that the use of DHA as a self-tanning agent in spray tanning up to a 14% concentration will not pose a risk to the health of the consumer.

Please note: All of my spray products are at a concentration significantly less than 14%.

The FDA advises asking the following questions when considering commercial facilities where DHA is applied by spraying or misting:
  • Are consumers protected from exposure in the entire area of the eyes, in addition to the eyes themselves?
  • Are consumers protected from exposure on the lips and all parts of the body covered by mucous membrane?
  • Are consumers protected from internal exposure caused by inhaling or ingesting the product?

At Body & Sol Bronzing Spray Tan I provide you with the following protection:
  • Lip Balm
  • Spray Tan Nose filters
  • Eye Protection
